The Reckoning: the Most Versatile, Adjustable, Comfortable Holster Ever

Is the Reckoning the most comfortable holster ever?

Some would argue that a bad guy who threatens you or your loved ones with deadly force deserves to face his reckoning. Well, that may be exactly what happens if he faces off against you wearing the Reckoning holster.

I write a lot of holster reviews for various industry publications, so I’ve seen a ton of different designs, material combinations, retention systems, and design gimmicks – some good, some awful. It takes a lot for a holster to impress me. When CrossBreed offered me a Reckoning when it first came out, I took them up on the challenge because a lot of really great press was already out there on the holster. Did I agree with the hype? I was about to find out.

A lot of holster companies claim “maximum customization,” but all that really means is you can adjust a few screws here and there, maybe switch out the Kydex shell if you change guns, perhaps pick from one of a few colors, and that’s about it. Aside from choosing from a list of factory options, very few holsters can truly be changed by the user to really be considered “customizable” in my book. Call me cynical, but throwing a few adjustment features onto a holster just doesn’t impress me anymore. So I was more than a bit jaded when the Reckoning arrived. To be honest, I didn’t think I would like it all that much. Another leather and plastic hybrid. Ho hum…

However, my weariness quickly evaporated as I pulled the Reckoning out of its cloth bag. (Side note: For those who are unfamiliar with CrossBreed’s product presentation, think how Apple would present the new iGun if they weren’t such a hotbed of liberalism.)

Immediately, I could tell the leather was better than most, and the powder-coated Kydex almost felt like steel. Then I noticed something I rarely see on a hybrid holster: adjustable retention. I might have been shaking a bit from excitement.

Now, I could go on and on about the great features of the Reckoning – and there are many – but the biggest one that stood out to me was the true customization. This may be the most customizable and versatile holster on the market today. It’s far more than moving a few screws up and down to adjust ride and cant. It’s about making the holster work for you in many ways.

First, it’s not only IWB but can be converted to OWB in a matter of minutes with a simple screwdriver. This is not new to the holster biz, but it is rare. And it’s super easy: take out the screws, set aside the IWB clips, and attach the OWB loops with the same screws in the same holes. Viola! And you get to choose between speed clips or closed loop wings for OWB. How many other holsters offer that? Answer: not a lot.

Second – and this is where the Reckoning pulls a fast one on the competition – if you’re concerned about the notorious grip print in either the appendix or strongside hip (it works in both places), you can add a claw to the IWB configuration to swing the grip just a smidge closer to your skin for a sleeker look with plenty of room left behind the grip for a confident and easy draw under pressure. Don’t need the claw? Just leave it off when you convert to IWB.

Last, you get to choose your leather backer: standard Black Cowhide, Founder’s Leather, or Natural Horsehide. And you get to pick from four Kydex colors: Standard Black, Sniper Grey, FDE, and OD Green. Again, this isn’t a ton of choices, but for those mathematicians out there, you get 12 distinct color and leather combinations.

The final selling point on the Reckoning is comfort. CrossBreed’s leather is rigid enough to hold up under years of continuous use yet comfortable enough that you almost forget you’re carrying a gun. Over time, the leather molds itself to your hip and blends right in.

There are versatile, customizable holsters…and then there is the Reckoning.

  1. Rt.handed, but prefer rt. To left when I draw. Seems faster when I reach across my body to draw and my arm offers a little protection from body. Not much, but some. Thanx.
